AA clearly prohibits the use of GPS (the ban is mentioned in the American Way magazine) while other airlines expressly permit it (like Southwest).

I wouldn't use my GPS on AA without clearing it with the flight deck. Ask politely when boarding. Worst they can do is parrot the company's prohibition.
