Does this mean that even if I purchase a ticket for myself and my spouse, my spouse must maintain her own account and send in her own boarding stubs? That seems needlessly complicated to me -- it doubles the paperwork and the hassle.

You can still issue awards from your account for you spouse but you cannot
accrue status and points together.

There have been reports that the airline has granted the widow of a frequent
flyer a grace period to burn some miles but even that is not according to the
T&C of Miles & More.

As for sending in boarding passes and tickets from *A carriers: those must
be flights flown after you have joined Miles and More otherwise LH will no
honour them ... I had the same problem when I started with LH.
