If the OP pays the change fee, AA would be happy to allow leaving day earlier.

To the OP. It has been my experience that usually airlines don't worry about such things until the day is actually here. If the flight is oversold, they move people around, with upgrades, possibly releasing some tickets to another airline and finally offering vouchers. In most cases that clears up any problems.

There are few instances when something went terribly wrong and they realize they really went overboard on selling tickets. In that case it has been reported that the airline will contact passengers at their own initiative ahead of time and offer flight changes and some form of compensation if the passenger is willing.

Their loads predictions are usually pretty good. The more serious oversell doesn't happen that often and it usually involves some serious mechanical problems, staffing, weather, etc....
