1. you can use KVS availability tool for that. just do a search on FT and you'll find it for download.
2. not sure if they can put you on a VDB list in SFO already for a flight 13hr later. but trying cvan't hurt. In FRA you can just do it at the lounge.
3. be ready to split up. chances for one or two to get VDBd are probably higher than 3 at a time. in the UA forum there are a few threads on getting bumped that are worth looking at - they are up in the stickies.
