I agree with
GUWonder. The thousands of compensation miles are, IMO, a greater dilution of elite perks than a one-year renewal of Gold status. Now the competition for award availability will be more fierce.

I can understand your annoyance. My colleagues got renewed with only about half the tier points required for Gold. With meetings in Germany and Switzerland, they were more than willing to shift business to *A after one CE flight with no catering.
