That's one reason why Starwood may want to reconsider this approach. If someone earns status in two programs, then they are more likely to shop around next time. And that is something that I presume Starwood does not want. (Then again, maybe the cost of not removing date-crossing transactions exceeds the benefit of keeping them -- even if this incentivizes/motivates people to book away from Starwood for some number of room nights.)
