I'm travelling to Paris for the first time this Dec. I was browsing Rick Steve's forum, and these people are talking about carrying hidden money belt, sowing ziplock bag to their pants, and hiding money in their shoes. OMG, is this really necessary?

I live in NYC, so I automatically assume Paris is pretty much the same. Safe if you use common sense, fun, great food. "Nice" people, aka no chit chat please. In general a misunderstood place.

Or am I just being naive? Any more realistic safety tips? OK to take subway at nite?
