Although I really don't think this was meant to be homophobic per se, the manager should be made aware of the connotation (at least to Americans) of this phrase. One could read this as : "Don't be offended but we're a heterosexual property, so don't bring another guy to your room." A such it was totally inappropriate, especially for a four seasons. Frankly, if you can afford those prices, they shouldn't care who you have as a guest. They can still have security and assure civilized behavior.
I have travelled solo to Singapore & Bali (stayed at the FS Sayan). I have never received such a "warning". Also I would NEVER invite a stranger (especially local) to my room at a resort where a single night costs more than a monthly/yearly wage. That's just stupid. And at such a place I would not want to be lectured.
And whereas I might appreciate certain security measures, what does that have to do with "family"? Do I not deserve the same safety as someone with a child? And I doubt that any "guest" the manager was referring to would be a danger to any of the children.
One of my worst nights was at a mid-upper range hotel in Duluth MN. They had a Christian youth convention and the little tykes (middle school) were terrorizing the halls. When I complained to the manager, he said he couldn't do anything cause they were breaking no law. So much for family.......
