It sounds like the fare class you wanted to book into may no longer be available - which is why the prices probably went up. Also, you're probably on a K-class fare which generally only allows 2 transfers in each direction, so unless you're planning on connecting in a hub city & then a mini-hub (like IND, MKE, or something), you probably won't be able to get too many connections out of it. If you posted the Fare Rules, people may be able to make suggestions as to how to route it. Alternatively, check out some of DL's fares - no elite upgrades, but 100% EQMs, and sometimes better routing possibilities. Also, note that BWI & IAD are about 50-some miles apart, just as an FYI...

As for other people's commentary on whether this post belongs in the Mileage Run forum or not, I believe it is okay for it to be here since you have found a fare you're comfortable with paying & you're looking for help in extending its routing.
