Neither would a blow to the head with a litre bottle of Bombay Sapphire - BAA still sells it though!
I've never had a problem on BA, LX, LH, AC, OS or UA with ski boots as carry-ons (all travel since 9/11).
In fact, I was on a packed weekend flight back from GVA last year and the Club Europe toilets (767) ended up being used as additional ski/board lockers due to an influx of late arriving passengers. A snowboard with bindings attached (or some skis for that matter) could do a mind boggling amount of damage...
