In my experience you can do anything in London on a credit card. The exception might be a few boutique type stores that may require a minimum card purchase. I would suggest pulling a minimum amount out with your ATM...most banks charge nothing beyond the ATM fee, and the exchange rate is far better than an actual exchange booth. Just having a few small bills/coins will likely come in handy, then save the rest for your next trip.
