Citing lackluster demand and low revenues, American Airlines intends to close its mainline Pittsburgh operation in mid-December, furlough 77 employees and shift passengers from 136-seat jets to smaller 70-seat regional jets flown by affiliate commuter carrier American Eagle.
The furloughed employees will have a chance to apply for new positions with American Eagle, according to American Eagle spokesman Dave Jackson.
American Eagle plans to add one flight to the four American already was providing daily to Dallas-Ft. Worth, and to continue to serve Chicago's O'Hare Airport with four flights and Miami International with one flight.
