Well you don't get to recline or leave your tray table unstowed during take off and landings so clearly there are accepted boundaries to the use of such 'features.' Meal service just happens to be another such situation where it is pretty well established that you don't get to recline if the passenger behind you is taking a meal.
I'd dearly love it if nobody ever reclines into me in Y, but I accept that as part and parcel of cattle class travel and thank my lucky stars I'm not 6 feet tall.
