I usually allow 7-8 minutes to get to the gate, 10-12 minutes to get through the xray, 5 minutes to get the bording pass entered, 5 minutes for allowance and assume they start board 30 minutes before departure - so that's about an hour before departure. I don't mind waiting in the gate a while rather than any last minute panics.
