Soft landing = an airline/hotel dropping your status no more than one level each year, even if you don't otherwise meet the qualification requirements for the status below the current ones. For example, this year's American Airlines EXPlats who don't fly even a mile this year will be AA Platinum next year even though they don't otherwise meet the qualification requirements for Platinum status.
