Citing fuel costs, American Eagle cuts flights

From Staff Reports
American Eagle, the regional affiliate of Fort Worth-based American Airlines Inc., said Wednesday it has begun canceling flights systemwide in response to the record-high cost of jet fuel.
The carrier will have cut 558 flights, or 1.3 percent of its service, between Oct. 5 and Oct. 29.
That averages to about 22 flights a day for the carrier, which has 1,700 daily departures, said Eagle spokesman Dave Jackson. The reduction mirrors a similar tactic used by American, which earlier this month announced it would cancel 15 round-trip flights a day during the same period because of high fuel prices.
Flights were cut based on passenger demand. No cities were eliminated from the schedule. Eagle said all passengers will be accommodated on other flights at different times.
American plans to re-evaluate its schedule plans at the end of the month to decide if further cancellations are needed.
Eagle has notified all its customers affected by the cancellations, Mr. Jackson said. Shares of Eagle parent company AMR Corp. fell 13 cents to $11.34.
