IME, the IAD experience depends completely on the screener. I've gotten familiar enough with them that there are some whose lanes I try to avoid as I know they're members of the P.T. Barnum crowd--if I see one of them, I try to move down to the next lane. Others will actually either look at your shoes and make a guess about the sole thickness, and others still ignore them entirely.
