In all seriousness, I did not use smilies at the start of my FT career, but have done so more and more since - it has nothing to do with ones humour or level of wit, it has to do with how easy it is for misunderstandings to develop, and because, bottom line, you can't hear a person's tone of voice in the text they write.
We all know how much trouble has been caused in the workplace in recent years by misunderstandings developing from e-mail communications (and in personal relationships due to text messages), which is why we all still have work meetings in person, or at least use the phone. FT is no different, and adding a

on the end of a sentance can make all the difference.
If you know the person in question (as many of the regulars/gang on this Forum do) then you need not bother, but I and many others don't (and you don't know me or them) so I'd rather not take the chance.
