I have too upgraded friends at the airport with my own 500 milers, even though I was not even flying. I guess United would rather pull upgrades from someone's account rather than op-up passengers. You will not find a written rule that allows these kinds of operations though. It's up to the agent, and of course, you're out of luck if there is no upgrade space available.
