$5, $10 and $20
When I was in Thailand last December I was determined to get Thai massage every other day for two weeks.(Since it costs $175/session in NYC) My first choice was Peninsula hotel spa and it was booked solid between X-mas and New Year.(For the record, Pen spa was $45+, I think) The concierge recommended a place right next Shangri-la---first office building next to the sky train station, thai massage session was for two hours and costed $20. It was my first time getting it so I couldn't tell whether it was good or bad. I went back to this place several more times and I will evaluate this place as just "average." At Koh Samui, I received one from the beach front(legit business) for $5 for 90min. It sucked. Finally, my bf and I went to a fancy city spa in Chiang Mai---even Four Season concierge recommended this place and we did the whole shh-bang spa package(floral bath, massage, facial) and if I went a la carte the Thai massage would have costed $40. By far this upscale place was the best. So, what's the difference between $5 and $40 one? IMHO, it's the technique--u can't compare the difference. Don't get dissapointed by $5 massage and spend little more money at a beautiful spa so you can experience the best.
