VIA RAIL: use coupons out of sequence?

Has anyone tried to use VIA Rail coupons out of sequence? For example, buy YOW-YUL-YYZ, use YUL-YYZ first, and YOW-YUL later (after changing the date)?

YOW-YUL-YYZ should cost about the same as YUL-YYZ because of the saving on provincial tax.

Also on a separate note, has anyone booked a R/T in VIA1 using an elite coupon and then refunded the return portion? I assume you'd get 50% of what you paid, and lose the second half of the coupon. I may need to do a one-way soon and would save the return portion for later in the year, but only if I can get a refund when the ticket expires (is that 12 months?).

Thanks!
