I believe it was Kafka's Law of Universal Morality that (paraphrased) has you ask of a given action: If everyone else in the world did this same action, would the world be a better or worse place?

In this case, I believe the "everyone" includes airline customer service staff and bean counters who would likewise maintain integrity on their side too.
