I've belonged to 24-Hour Fitness for three years but when I bought my house, went from 5 minutes away to 20 minutes (which has stretched to 30 with highway construction). I have a lifetime there so I kept it for travel (since their reciprocity is great) but ended up supplementing with a YMCA membership - best $$$ I have ever spent and definitely an option I hadn't considered beyond the local "gym" gyms.
The drive time is exactly what I am suffering through right now. I now understand that I can get just as good of a workout carrying the groceries in from the car as I coudl get from Curves. It's sad that they don't even have tredmills...guess bench pressing is out the door with them too...I would say that my grandma woudl have a nice time there (she's 80) but not anyone who is remotely active. Guess I'll just keep running the 5 miles a day...
