Tape deck adapters will alway provide better sound than a portable FM transmitter. I have never been happy with the FM units as they dont seem powerful enough (except for my XM2GO, which has an internal FM transmitter with more power behind it.
Problem is, most newer cars don't have tape players anymore. I was a big fan of tape adapters in the 80's when I did a lot of traveling to SoCal, and had a Sony digital audio tape recorder. It sounded great - always better than the FM transmitter counterpart. But, that was a long time ago.. I've since converted over to MP3. I've also got an XM Roady2 in my car that is hardwired into the AUX input of my Panasonic headunit.
