I think your CF card erasure was a real fluke. For short term while traveling, a memory card should be more reliable than a hard drive, though probably not as good as a cd.

Flash memory is down to close to $50 a gig. Lots of pictures on a 1 gig chip...........use two chips, and take the pictures twice maybe
