This all depends on the location to be honest. Some places have the cheap $50 pay upgrade and they sell out pretty quickly. There really is no set time. You have to be more specific with your city pairs. When I fly to IAH I can get a upgrade pretty much anytime. Going to ORD it is extremelly hard no matter what time. So it just depends.
