As long as it is not a reward ticket, you should be be able to EUA on the domestic portions. The only time it gets sticky is when its a continued service flight. For example, from houston to madrid, frankfurt, and perhaps some others there are several flights with one stop..in ewr... if your domestic portion has the same flight number as the ewr-europe portion ... EUA won't upgrade you. I have had luck as platinum being upgraded at the gate once they understood the situation (the gate agents at ewr were great about this...however people in the ground in Frankfurt said they couldn't do it and I called the platinum line once in ewr and they were, of course, no help..I had to wait until the gate for my flight to houston opened up). However, now I typically try to avoid this situation when booking (by taking another flight) so I can get EUAed.
