Can anyone confirm that this is actually happening? I know i'm too cheap to purchase the upgrade coupons on US, the few times I've flown them so haven't figured out when/if an upgrade would clear.

I fly on US metal a lot --- I use those space available upgrades and have been told that I clear directly after US CP's that are on date of departure standby. I think its probably true as I have been clearing about 80% of the time on PHX-PHL and return and about 70% on PHX-CLT and return
