It's not *G, it's the level of status for UA/US. For upgrades, and I'm assuming standby is the same, it was supposed to be top tier UA, then US top tier, mid tier UA, then US mid-tier, etc. Remember US can't request the upgrade until day of departure, just like UA passengers on US equipment.
Can anyone confirm that this is actually happening? I know i'm too cheap to purchase the upgrade coupons on US, the few times I've flown them so haven't figured out when/if an upgrade would clear.
