I wish you the best of luck and my experience of Amex has always been that they are more than reasonable to deal with. But without asking I have to say I would have assumed the statement date was the relevant one, not the anniversary date. And I don't think I would have risked taking it so close to the wire in either case! But let us know how you get on.
