Were you never able to use your upgrades then? Or have you just booked your ticket so close to your flight that upgradable BE fares (Z/X etc.) are no longer available? Just curious. In my opinion.. and yes I am opinionated about it by default.. DL/AMEX will give you opportunities to use your miles towards BE travel.
