I left my driver's license on the plane to DEN last year. The plane continued on to PDX, so when I tried to return the next day, I had no identification. DL issued a ticket with the SSSS endorsement, and all I had to do was go through the special security screening. Neither the DL agent nor the TSA asked for an ID, though I did tell the DL agent all about my itinerary without her asking.

Now renting a car, even with Hertz status and a corporate travel agency to back you up, is not possible unless your state's department of motor vehicles is open.
