The whole thing got me wondering... How often do FT'ers, shall we say, "indirectly adjust" vacation destinations to maximize miles? (GF busted me last year when I tried to do LGA-IAD-LHR instead of a straight shot... Why do you care so much about the miles, she asked.

)
I do the same thing! I even change my destination and routing based on the aircraft flown. For example, during August when I did a mileage run AA had CHEAP fares from DEN-MIA direct. But, for an additional $100 I could fly DEN-DFW-MIA-DEN, with the DFW-MIA segment on a 777. So I booked the more expensive reservation for the sole purpose of flying on a 777. It was well worth it! Now when I go to Germany common sense would say take the IAD-MUC flight direct on a 767/777. Not me! I will fly SFO-FRA for the sole purpose of flying on a 747 (I have never been on one).
So are you sick for changing the vacation destination based on the availability of UA metal? NO! What's the point of having elite status on UA if you can't enjoy the perks on UA? Go to Singapore, or Sydney, or Tokyo...basically, any place UA flies!
