As purely anecdotal evidence, I'll mention that I'm flying to HOU three times this month and AUS twice. And I'm not even a particularly frequent traveler (only AA GLD). If I had to go out to JFK to make the trip to Austin ... well, I wouldn't. I guess I'd put up with connecting through DFW, though I wouldn't be happy about it.
