I've had same-day passports made with a morning drop off of paperwork and an afternoon pick-up of passports and paperwork. Next day turnaround times are even less of an issue. In both cases, having a ticket with your travel date helps.

In a few situations, I've bought fully refundable tickets just to get the same-day or overnight service.
