I can confirm the same for AA - I almost always get to LHR less than 2 hours before my flight, sometimes as late as an hour before. I've even checked in 20 mins before an IB flight LHR-BCN (though I wouldn't recommend it).

AA.com is clear that 2 hours is recommended. It makes no mention of a cut-off.
