Thanks to FT's new format of putting random threads on the front page, I can add my $.02-- in US or Canadian, your choice.
The bus from downtown Detroit to the airport is a pain and a half-- you have to ride a SMART suburban bus from downtown out Michigan to like Michigan and Middlebelt Road, then transfer to a crosstown bus into the airport. Add in the Tunnel Bus from Windsor and the Windsor transit bus from the VIA station to downtown Windsor and you're looking at local transit time almost as long as the train Toronto-Windsor.
There's a Robert Q Airbus shuttle with service to DTW directly from London-- my advice would be to pay the extra few bucks and do that. If you're running late and need to hop a cab en route between VIA Windsor and the airport, you'll easily pay as much as the shuttle. Fare is $54 CAD one way, and buses leave London every 2 hours. FWIW, they also offer service between YYZ and Windsor for $66CAD-- maybe you could somehow talk them into like a $70CAD YYZ--->DTW??
Please post what you find out. If you need more transportation info on the Michigan side of things, send an e-mail to me. Good luck.
