It comes down to what you think is easier - lugging the base along, or re-installing the seat every time you get in the car. FWIW, the airlines always allowed us to check the seat base without counting it against our luggage allowance. We just wrote "infant car seat" on the box.
Perhaps this depends on the car??? Again going back to the carseat we have here in the UK, it has a "level" on the side. Comes up as "true" whether we use the base, or bolt it into the car on its own.
Anyway, I think the important point is the fact that there's no legislation that demands you use the base...
