Yes, it takes a lot of training to pull that off. But it also requires nerves of steel that I'm sure a good chunk of the population lacks.
Unfortunately there is no empiric data to back up a theory that a highly paid pilot stands for more safety than a pilot who is paid less....
Actually the 747 crashes all over the years showed us exactly the opposite....
Question is if it is more difficult to drive a 40 ton truck through the Blue Ridge Mountains or land a highly advanced plane....
As long as the authorities require a certain quantity of training, I do not see why a pilot`s salary has to be sky high...
