I would be interested to know the outstanding properties you choose to stay in within the Beverly Hills/Century City area to call the exceptional Park Hyatt Los Angeles a "sad conventioneer’s hotel".
It remains one of my top hotels of choice in town when the rate is agreeable
Lately though I am sorry to say the rates have sky rocketed.
IMO the Park Hyatt is certainly a clean comfortable attractive oasis in the city with first class public areas, comfortable well appointed rooms and suites (some with world class views) and a state of the art small health club with new upscale spa.
They also have a number of talented team members in house who take good care of their guests.
While service levels have fluctuated over the years it has always been one of the more preferred hotels amongst travelers including VIPs and celebrities.
While it may not be the Park Hyatt in Paris or Milan IMO they still hold their own.
I do have to seriously question though on your other quote of “to avoid at all costs"
That remark perhaps may be connected to a service failure on one of your past stays.
All in all this is still a mighty fine property. ^
Like any hotel there are certainly some areas that could take some areas of improvement. I would be happy to stay or for that matter live in the Park Hyatt Los Angeles standard anywhere in the world.....And I am far from an easy guest to please

Hyatt by and large is an excellent lodging company to do business with.
And has a solid rewarding loyalty program.We also have great friends with the good folks at Hyatt Gold Passport who feature on average some of the best customer service industry wide of any of the programs

In answer to the OP questions
***HYATT REGENCY
Typically on average large hi rise convention hotels with atriums & your basic
industry quality standards sometimes above average.
More apt to have executive lounges.
Average food service.
Yet then again Hyatt Regency Irvine better dining then some Park Hyatts.
No exact rule
There are still some standouts too in the Regency Brand
Especially with some of the new renovations taking place at a number of the properties.
Typically very busy environments
***GRAND HYATT
On average more upscale elegant ,more intimate feel to the properties.More apt to have Exceutive Lounges.Usually above average experience.
Usually more relaxing environment
Above average food service on
***PARK HYATT
The Luxury & Award Winning Brand.
Usually outstanding more often then not
A real Ladies and Gentleman world.......A brand more likely to get details right about your personal preferences.Far more polished service and upscale amenities.Better dining quality and options.
Very relaxing,calming environment.Rarely ever an Executive lounge
