you can always go to the airport but then its a $15 fee. Call back again and try maybe you can get a US based agent. I had an experience similar to yours on the phone when the SP line was closed. I was trying to change a ticket and it ended up being easier for me to just cancell the ticket online and rebook the ticket. If yours is a full fare changeable refundable ticket you could always go that route. That would eliminate teh $5 fee as well.
