The points made by the article may be valid for the vast majority of the traveling public, but for FTers, who know how to maximize mileage accumulation and redemption, there is no question that it's worth it. For example, I have been flying internationally since 1985. My first trip was EWR-LGW on People's Express, returning AMS-JFK on LY, both in coach. Since that time, I have never suffered the indignity of coach (and rarely J) in all of my international travels, which is a function of (1) working for a firm that permits international travel in J, and (2) judicious use of frequent flyer miles and upgrade opportunities afforded to frequent flyers. I'd say that makes it worth it right there.
