I hope they at least give them an exit rows to whoever they can, that would be the least that they could do. But who gets priority in a downgrade between a P who confirmed the upgrade months ago, or an Elite who confirmed the upgrade 4 days ago? assuming both are on the same fare. Personally I think the priority order should go paid J, and then in order of the time the upgrade was confirmed. Afterall many buy an M fare because they want to make sure they get J. Buying an H fare is a gamble, even as an SE, you must admit there is some risk.
To line up with meal service, downgrades should be strictly by status (SE -- then everyone else ). I would think offers of alternative flights or compensation (similar to bump policy) should apply here too.
