United (and, I think, American) enforce a 2 hour check-in cutoff for US-bound flights out of LHR, and I've been taken to task by the counter staff for cutting it as "fine" as 2h15m prior to departure. I've also seen them flat refuse to check people in who had missed the cutoff.
That's good to know. I'm flying UA for the first time LHR-LAX in December and I wondered about check in times. Now I know
