I've done it before - you just swallow the fees, checking on-line beforehand for avail. for 2 pax - I wouldn't inherently (nothing against BA - same for any airline, hotel) trust the system for automatically free-ing up seats once you cancelled your original booking, anyone else have confidence it would?
