Consider yourself lucky. United (and, I think, American) enforce a 2 hour check-in cutoff for US-bound flights out of LHR, and I've been taken to task by the counter staff for cutting it as "fine" as 2h15m prior to departure. I've also seen them flat refuse to check people in who had missed the cutoff.
