The previous promotions haven't been done this way, and it just doesn't make sense. I would call PC again and escalate.
As for checking out or staying, we're each different. I have zero nesting instinct and have no use for the hotel during the day, so I pack light and check out every morning--even if I'm staying at the same hotel (sometimes it works). The only time I stay more than one night is when a hotel offers bonus points for a 2-3 night stay--or when I'm traveling with my better half.
