As shortfinals pointed out, "You can't judge a book by it's cover". There should be no reason why people cannot treat each other with "respect", fullstop. Given the design flaw peter11 mentioned, they should have a few dedicated staff who can ask a question and can then direct people to the proper check-in area. It is that simple (I think).
