No cancellation fee, if your stay reservation has an associated cert number with it ( which I assume it does since you are asking about points) call the Diamond or Gold desk tell you want to cancel and the points will be redeposited in your account almost instantly.
If you do have a generic type reward cert make sure to cancel both the stay and the cert to get your pionts back.

Since this posting was a while ago, is this still true? Cancel an award & cert with no penalty? There was availabilty now for a stay in Nov, though there is a slight chance I may need to cancel.
