When I was 8 or 9, my family was in Baltimore on a weekend in December. We were staying at a Holiday Inn, and my father had a stag Christmas party that Saturday night. My mother, sister and I go to sleep before my father gets back, and my mother wakes us up around 1AM. The fire alarm was going off, but was quiet and sounded more like a buzzing, rather than a real alarm. She originally thought it was the elevator noise, as if someone was stuck in the elevator. She calls down to the front desk, and is told it's the fire alarm, and they're evacuating the hotel, so she has us put on our coats and shoes, and we walk down several flights of steps, then have to stand outside, in the cold, for half an hour or so, until they figured out that the exterminators the hotel had in that night sprayed something that got into the hvac systems, and looked like smoke. The staff didn't do anything to apologize, nor did they even say, "We're sorry for the inconvenience." I still get teased about the fact that I was afraid my father would get back and not see us in the lobby and think something had happened to us. Little did I know then that his Christmas party ran until after the bars closed, and normally resulted in everyone being dropped off in taxis afterwards.
Seven or eight years ago, we were staying at the Delta Chelsea in Toronto, and after dinner, the fire alarms started going off. It was a false alarm, but I don't remember what caused it, but we had to wait for 45 minutes after they let everyone back inside, for the elevators. The staff started going through the lines of people with beverage carts and provided drinks free of charge while we were waiting in line, being very apologetic at all times.
Two false alarms, never any real fires thankfully!
