Actually, I have an AMEX platinum and have not found that to be true. I booked through PTS on a business trip - Ritz Carlton Buckhead. My boss had booked on Expedia and was all proud of his rate. My rate was $40/night cheaper, I was upgraded to the concierge floor, and there was some amenity I didn't have a chance to use.
Recently, I did a super-quick trip to Vegas to see a friend. Was flying in Saturday a.m., and taking the red eye out Sunday night. Wanted to be able to stay in my room as late as possible, so booked at the Venetian through PTS. My rate was about $175, my room was HUGE (I got an upgrade), and I got to use the Canyon Ranch Spa for free, in addition to the late checkout.
Another time, a friend and I stayed at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. Our rate was around $265, but we got upgraded to a suite and got free breakfast in the hotel restaurant every day of our stay. Friends who also stayed there paid more and didn't get a suite.
So, my $.02.
